Giving Thanks for First Responders: Recognizing the People Behind Every Emergency Call
When someone dials 911, a remarkable network of professionals moves into action. Dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, and air-medical crews each play a vital role in ensuring that lifesaving care reaches those in need—often within minutes.
As the season of gratitude arrives, PHI Cares, the membership program of PHI Air Medical, honors the first responders who stand ready every day to protect and serve their communities.

The Network Behind Every Emergency Response
Most people think of first responders as those who arrive on scene, but an emergency response starts long before sirens or rotor blades are heard. It begins with a coordinated system of professionals—all working together to save lives.
911 Dispatchers: The Calm Voice in the Storm
Every emergency begins with a call. Dispatchers are the calm voices guiding frightened callers through critical moments, gathering key information, and directing resources in seconds. They coach CPR over the phone, coordinate multiple agencies, and remain on the line until help arrives. Their precision and composure make them the invisible backbone of emergency response.
Ground Responders: The Foundation of Emergency Care
Firefighters, EMTs, and law enforcement officers form the first layer of on-site care. Firefighters battle flames, perform rescues, and manage hazardous situations. EMTs and paramedics stabilize patients and coordinate transport. Law enforcement officers secure the scene, ensuring safety for responders and victims alike. Together, they form the bridge that connects patients to higher levels of care.
Air Medical Teams: Bringing Critical Care to the Skies
When time or distance makes ground transport impossible, air-medical professionals take over. PHI Air Medical operates a nationwide fleet of air ambulance helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft staffed by highly trained flight nurses, paramedics, and pilots. These teams deliver advanced critical care and rapid transport to trauma centers and specialty hospitals when every minute matters.
Each flight is a coordinated effort between dispatchers, ground EMS, and hospital teams. PHI crews train year-round in both medical and aviation safety to ensure every mission meets the highest standards of care. From rural emergencies to large-scale disasters, air-medical crews embody the professionalism and teamwork that define the first-responder community.
The Power of Teamwork in Every Mission
Effective emergency response depends on seamless coordination. When a serious vehicle collision occurs, for example, dispatchers alert multiple agencies, law enforcement clears the roadway, firefighters handle extrication, EMTs begin stabilization, and air-medical crews provide advanced treatment and rapid transport. It’s a synchronized system built on trust, communication, and shared commitment.
PHI Air Medical actively participates in regional training exercises, community drills, and interagency simulations to ensure that every link in the response chain remains strong. The partnership between air and ground responders saves countless lives each year—and reflects the dedication of professionals united by a single goal: helping people when they need it most.
Dedication Beyond the Call of Duty
Being a first responder isn’t just a career—it’s a calling. Many responders work 12- to 24-hour shifts, often missing holidays and family milestones. They carry the weight of difficult calls and still return to serve again the next day. Their courage, resilience, and compassion define the heart of emergency medicine.
At PHI Air Medical, our pilots, nurses, and paramedics represent this dedication with every mission. Each air ambulance flight involves quick decision-making, technical precision, and emotional steadiness. Whether flying in severe weather, over mountainous terrain, or through rural farmland, they provide the same level of care and professionalism that patients expect in hospital intensive care units.
Spotlight: PHI Air Medical Team Members in Action
Across the country, PHI Air Medical team members are being recognized for their service, leadership, and community involvement. Their stories highlight the personal commitment behind the PHI Cares mission—and remind us what we’re thankful for this season.
Zane Atencio – Caldwell County, Texas
Zane Atencio, a flight paramedic with PHI Med 14, was featured this year when Caldwell County renewed its emergency air-medical membership agreement with PHI Cares. Zane’s story is especially meaningful—an air-medical team transported him via air ambulance as an infant and now serves on the frontlines of emergency care.
He also shares his expertise at the Texas EMS Conference, presenting on topics such as shock index assessment and trauma response. His journey from patient to provider embodies the full circle of lifesaving care that PHI Air Medical represents. This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for professionals like Zane who bring both personal purpose and exceptional skill to every mission.
Michelle Guthrie – Sonora, California
Michelle Guthrie, a flight nurse with PHI Med 4-2 in Sonora, California, was recognized for her outreach and leadership within her local EMS community. Michelle frequently partners with hospital emergency departments and ambulance crews, offering impromptu training sessions and scenario reviews designed to improve coordination and clinical outcomes.
Her commitment to continuous learning and teamwork reflects PHI Air Medical’s culture of collaboration—where every crew member, from pilot to paramedic, plays a vital role in ensuring the highest level of patient care. We’re thankful for professionals like Michelle who take initiative not only in flight but also in strengthening the systems that support their communities on the ground.
LeAnn O. McGregor – Phoenix, Arizona
LeAnn O. McGregor, a maternal and neonatal flight nurse based in Phoenix, Arizona, has dedicated more than 37 years to serving mothers and newborns in critical condition. With over 45 years of nursing experience, she is part of PHI Air Medical’s specialized team that transports high-risk expectant mothers and premature infants using advanced incubators and in-flight ventilators.
Her crew serves one of the nation’s few dedicated maternal-neonatal air-medical programs, capable of delivering advanced therapies such as high-frequency ventilation and nitric-oxide treatment mid-flight. LeAnn was recently quoted in national news outlets emphasizing the vital role of air-ambulance services in rural and underserved areas: “It cannot be understated how important air-medical transport is for mothers and young babies across the state.”
Her compassion and professionalism exemplify the essence of the PHI Cares mission—providing critical access to care when seconds count. This Thanksgiving, we’re especially thankful for nurses like LeAnn who ensure that even the smallest patients receive the highest level of medical attention.

From all of us at PHI Cares and PHI Air Medical, we extend heartfelt thanks to every dispatcher, firefighter, EMT, police officer, and air-medical professional who makes our communities safer and stronger. Your dedication inspires us all.
